Adele surpasses one million digital download mark, notches new record

English songwriter and soul singer Adele notches a million digital downloads of her album "21" and becomes the first female artist to hit this modern music milestone.

Adele does so just a week after Eminem did the same with his album, “Recovery.” However, Adele surpasses Eminem’s numbers (1,005,000) with a whopping 1,017,000 in total digital sales of her sophomore release.

“21” also reigns as this year’s best selling album so far, with physical CD sales totaling 2.6 million copies. Adele’s “21” recently spent 10 non-consecutive weeks atop the Billboard 200 charts. Its lead single “Rolling In The Deep,” likewise, is the number one selling digital song with downloads totaling 4.23 million. Katy Perry , the previous title holder with “E.T.” featuring Kanye West, slips to number two with 4.19 million total downloads.

Meanwhile, this week’s top album honors still belong to Beyoncé and her brand new album “4,” which sells 115,000 copies to retain peak position. Beyoncé also clinches the honor across the Atlantic as “4” reaches the top of UK album charts this week.

On the singles charts, LMFAO still parties atop the Hot 100 with “Party Rock Anthem” featuring Lauren Bennett and Goonrock. This is the duo’s second week at number one after grabbing the lead spot last week. LMFAO, composed of DJ Redfoo and Skyblu a.k.a. Stefan Gordy and Skyler Gordy, also aces this week’s Digital Songs chart with 236,000 downloads of “Party Rock Anthem.”

Pitbull, the Latino MC, still hovers close to the top as “Give Me Everything” featuring Ne-yo, Afrojack and Nayer stays at number two. Also staying at the same position as last week is British soul singer Adele with “Rolling In The Deep,” which clocks in at number three.

These three songs, along with a number of other tracks in the singles chart, stay at their respective positions: Katy Perry’s “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.),” Nicki Minaj’s “Super Bass,” and Lady Gaga’s “The Edge Of Glory,” all of which place at number four, five and six spots, respectively.

Rising from number eight to seven is Lil Wayne with “How To Love.” Likewise, Ryan Tedder and One Republic advances a notch to number eight with “The Good Life,” and Hot Chelle Rae does the same with “Tonight Tonight” which rises to number nine.

Closing this week’s Hot 100’s top ten listing is Katy Perry and her former number one hit “E.T.” featuring Kanye West which drops three notches to number ten.

GMA, wagi pa rin sa nationwide ratings

Mula sa malakas na nationwide ratings performance nitong unang semestre ng 2011, lalong pinalaki ng GMA Network ang lamang nito sa ABS-CBN sa nationwide ratings nitong partial July.

Ayon ito sa Nielsen TV Audience Measurement.

Para sa unang anim na buwan ng taon, GMA ang number one channel sa Pilipinas sa pagtatala ng 33.1 household share points, mas mataas kumpara sa 32.1 ng ABS-CBN.

Lumundag sa 34.5 ang audience share points ng Kapuso Network sa bansa laban sa 31.4 points ng ABS-CBN nitong Hulyo 1-7.

Ang lamang ay dulot ng matatag na programming lineup ng Kapuso Network sa lahat ng time blocks, lalung-lalo na sa weekday afternoon.

Para sa nasabing period, pumalo ang lamang ng GMA sa 5.3 points channel ratings para sa block na umeere mula 12:00 NN hanggang 6:00 PM.

Patuloy na inilalampaso ng Eat Bulaga ang Happy Yihee Yehey na wala pa sa kalahati ang channel ratings performance kumpara sa una.

Nasa ika-9 na pwesto ang Eat Bulaga sa listahan ng top 10 programs sa National Urban Philippines at nagtala ng 22 household ratings points kumpara sa 9.8 points ng HYY.

KBP slaps fines on Big 3

TV stations ABS-CBN, TV5 with Radyo Mo ‘went out of bounds to get a scoop’.

Two big television stations and one radio network were slapped fines of P30,000 for violating broadcasting standards in its coverage of the August 2010 Luneta hostage-taking crisis.

An internal investigation by the broadcast industry’s self-regulating body showed that ABS-CBN, TV5 and Radio Mindanao Network went out of bounds to get a scoop at the risk of several lives.

“TEN months, nine lives and a flurry of finger-pointing and paperwork later, the controversy over the media coverage of the 2010 Luneta hostage-taking incident by the country’s biggest and most influential television and radio networks has come down to feeble fines of P30,000, and a virtual slap on the wrist,” reported the Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism.

PCIJ’s Ed Lingao reports:

The fines were levied by the Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster ng Pilipinas (KBP), the national association of owners and operators of radio and television stations in the country.

The KBP levied fines for broadcasting information that it ruled could have compromised police efforts to rescue the hostages during the day-long hostage-taking incident at the Quirino Grandstand on Aug. 23, 2010.

The KBP Standards Authority ordered ABS-CBN Broadcasting Channel 2, Associated Broadcasting Company Channel 5 (now known as TV5) and radio station Radyo Mo Nationwide (RMN, which was earlier called Radio Mindanao Network) to each pay P30,000 in penalty for violations of the KBP broadcast code.

In addition to RMN’s fine, news anchors Michael Rogas and Erwin Tulfo were ordered to pay fines of P15,000 and P10,000, respectively, for getting in the way of negotiations between police and hostage-taker Rolando Mendoza.

In the Dec. 15, 2010, ruling—a copy of which PCIJ obtained only recently— the KBP also ordered RMN to reprimand both Rogas and Tulfo for their role in the coverage.

But the KBP Standards Authority expressed frustration over its inability to regulate broadcasters who are no longer members of the association.

The KBP singled out in particular GMA-7 Network, which was also the subject of several complaints because of its coverage of the incident.

GMA-7 withdrew its membership from the KBP in September 2003 after a tiff over commercial loading limits set by the association.

A minor planet numbered 26740 has been named after Filipino-American student Martin Ayalde Camacho of Central High School, St. Paul, Minnesota, USA after winning the top prize in the 2010 Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF).

Camacho is now a freshman at Harvard College on a US presidential scholarship as one of the 141 outstanding high school seniors who composed the US Presidential Scholars Class of 2010.

He was given the recognition due to his achievements as the first place award winner in the Intel ISEF, a high school science competition of the Society for Science and the Public and Intel Foundation.
The planet was discovered by the LINEAR Program of Massachusetts Institute of Technology Lincoln Laboratory.

The award was announced recently by Dr. Grant H. Stokes, head of the Aerospace Division and principal investigator of the LINEAR Program.

The awardee is the son of University of the Philippines alumni Godofredo T. Camacho Jr. and Patricia V. Ayalde who are based in St. Paul, Minnesota.

Filipina wins special prize in Boston Ballet Competition

Candice Adea of Ballet Philippines won the coveted Maris Liepa Prize for Outstanding Artistry at the 2011 Boston International Ballet Competition.

The prize recipient will be invited to perform in Paris in 2012 along with stars from Bolshoi and Mariinsky Theaters presenting Fokine ballets as part of the Russian season in France. Candice will be performing “Firebird.”

The 24 year old is a principal dancer of Ballet Philippines, resident company of the Cultural Center of the Philippines.

The Boston International Ballet Competition (BIBC) was founded & directed by Valentina Koslova, and the Liepa Prize was named after Maris Liepa, legendary dancer, choreographer and teacher at the Bolshoi Ballet.

The Maris Liepa Fund directed by Liepa’s children Andris & Ilze, was established for the purpose of preserving & celebrating the beauty of classical ballet.

In 2010, Candice won the silver medal for the Senior Division at the 2010 USA International Ballet Competition, which is more popularly known as the Jackson competition, as it is held in Jackson, Mississippi.

Candice started dancing at the young age of 4. She started dancing under Pamela Ortiz and Josette Salang. Later, she was mentored by Brezhnev Larlar and the CCP Dance School until she entered the portal of the Philippine High School for the Arts, where she honed her craft under the expertise of Nonoy Froilan, Victor Ursabia and Ronilo Jaynario.

At age 13, she was a semi-finalist at the 8th Asia Pacific Ballet Competition in Tokyo, Japan. Three years later, she made it to the finals. In 2003, she joined Ballet Philippines and has starred in stage productions like Snow White, Coppelia, Peter Pan’s Neverneverland, the Nutcracker and Amada for which she received the Gawad Buhay Award for Most Outstanding female lead dancer for 2009. In 2007, she competed at the 9 th New York International Ballet Competition.

In 2010, through years of hard work, undeterred discipline, and passion for the craft, Adea’s efforts has been recognized with flying colors with the silver in the US. The success continues with this special recognition in Boston.

Filipino boxer captures Gold Medal in Uzbekistan

Light flyweight Mark Anthony Barriga stunned the Sydney Jackson Memorial Tournament here by upsetting hometown bet Shahobiddin Zoirov, 4-1, to capture the gold medal.

The Uzbekistan fighter’s corner earlier boasted that Barriga, from Davao del Norte, would be mincemeat since Zoirov had competed for Russia during an earlier world class tournament.

But the 17-year-old Barriga, fast on his feet and even faster with his fists, silenced them all, running rings around his more seasoned foe and leaving the judges no choice but to concede to the inevitable.

“Mark utterly frustrated him and forced him to commit mistakes,” said Ed Picson, the Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines Executive Director.

Former Asian Games gold medalist Joan Tipon, back after recovering from a shoulder injury that forced him into a sabbatical, settled for the silver medal after dropping a close 3-2 decision to Shohruh Hujabekov also of Uzbekistan.

Tipon, 29, from Bacolod City, led, 2-0, after the first round but lost steam in the next two rounds. The bell quickly rang after the Uzbek picked up his third point.

“We’re happy with their performance,” said Picson. “We know now where we need to step up and make adjustments. That’s the important thing. The medals are bonuses.”

Asteroid named after a Young Pinoy scholar

Two scholars of the Department of Science and Technology (DoST) outshined other contestants in a recent international science fair in the United States (US) as they garnered the second and fourth places, with one of them gaining a unique award – an asteroid.

DoST Merit Scholar Miguel Arnold Reyes, a graduate of the Philippine Science High School (PSHS) Main Campus, took home $1,500 and will have an asteroid to be named after him as an award from the Lincoln Laboratory of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology during the 2011 International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) held in Los Angeles, California.

While Angeli Joyce Dy of Capiz National High School also won fourth place and took home a $500 prize.

Reyes’ research outshined other researches with his “Synthesis and Characterization of Composite Plastics from Thermoplastic Starch and Nano-sized Calcium Phosphate for Film Packaging,” which seeks to produce biodegradable plastic for film packaging from a composite of thermoplastics from cornstarch and nano-sized phosphate particles.

Dy’s research titled “Milkfish (Chanos chanos Forsskal) Serum as an Alternative Media Supplement for Culture of A549 (Human Lung) and HCT 116 (Colon) Carcinomas.

Her research showed that milkfish serum is rich in mannose-binding proteins and albumin that are potential replacements of expensive fetal bovine serum (FBS) being used as culture of the lung and colon cancer cells.

Meanwhile, Dr. Leticia V. Catris, officer-in-charge of the Science Education Institute-DoST, showed great appreciation for Reyes’ achievement.

“Reyes is a welcome addition to the growing roster of future scientists and engineers in the country, which will take the Philippines to greater heights. We are optimistic that Reyes will even outshine the asteroid named after him as he pursues a science career,” she said.

Reyes is expected to pursue a computer engineering course at the University of the Philippines-Diliman.

Reyes will be joining the ranks of Filipinos who got an asteroid named after them.

They include: former Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration Administrator Dr. Roman L. Kintanar; Edwin Aguirre; Imelda Joson; PSHS Western Visayas Campus Director Josette Biyo; Allan Noriel Estrella; Jeric Valles Macalintal; Prem Villas Fortran Rara; and Father Victor Badillo.

The ISEF is an annual science competition organized by the Society for Science and the Public that provides a venue for high school students all over the world to showcase their independent research materials.

Norwegian-Filipina wins spot in Hollywood billboard

When Norwegian softdrink Solo launches its brand for Americans, the first face they would see on its billboard ad is that of 17-year-old Norwegian-Pinay Charlotte Bryhn.

This, after the Pinay-Norwegian beauty’s poster designed by her dad, Tommy Bryhn, got picked by the softdrink company to be its first-ever digital ad on Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood.

The campaign on the company’s website urged Norwegian fans to send their poster entry in what it called as a chance to win their “15 seconds of fame.”

Bryhn was not even aware that her dad sent an entry until she got a call from a representative of Solo informing her that she would be the first Norwegian whose face would be featured in their billboard in the states. She also got a case of the Solo softdrink.

“It was funny, my family and friends also thought so,” Bryhn told ABS-CBN News on how she reacted to the unexpected call.

Although she does not expect that this exposure would necessary open doors for a career in Hollywood, she nevertheless thinks it would be “exciting if something comes up in the future.”

She also pointed out that the feat is not really a big deal saying “it was just a contest, and I was only randomly selected. Lucky that this one includes my picture,” she added.

Bryhn was born to Filipina-Norwegian Eden Celso, whose family hails from Samar. Celso is married to Tommy Bryhn. She has a younger sister,Christina.

Far from chasing the American dream, Bryhn is more focused on her sports studies as freshman at Frogn High School in Drøbak, a city located along the Oslofjord and is known as the winter harbour of Norway.

Hollywood has to wait, at least for now.

Pacquiao confirms 3rd Marquez fight

Pound-for-pound king and fighting Congressman Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao has confirmed that he will battle Mexican Juan Manuel Marquez on November 12.

It will be the third meeting between the two fighters.

Their two previous bouts were controversial.

In 2004, Pacquiao settled for a draw in their first fight despite knocking Marquez down in the first round.

Four years later, their second meeting ended in a split decision in favor of Pacquiao.

The third fight will be at a 145-pound catchweight.

Pacquiao said he will start training in September.

“Tuloy na po yun, abangan n’yo,” said the 8-division world champion.

Marquez signed the contract for the fight last May 19.

Pacquiao confirmed the news during a victory party that Governor Luis 'Chavit' Singson gave in his honor on Sunday night.

The Corinthian Gardens Clubhouse was filled with politicians, celebrities and other various VIPs, who all came to celebrate Pacquiao’s victory over Shane Mosley.

“Tradisyon na natin ito, laging may victory party with Gov. Singson,” Pacquiao said.

Among those present were Vice-President Jejomar Binay and former President Joseph Estrada.

“He’s the best fighter that the Philippines has ever produced and the whole country is very proud of him,” said Estrada.

Pacquiao says yes to 'Glee' guesting

Boxing champion Manny Pacquiao said that he is open to the idea of appearing in the hit TV show "Glee" as a guest.

In an interview with ABS-CBN News reporter Gretchen Fullido, Pacquiao admitted that he was invited to guest on Glee but had yet to receive confirmation about the offer. Pacquiao, who counts singing as one of his many passions, said he wants to guest on the musical show.

Even Pacquiao's wife, Jinkee, and friend, Ilocos Sur Gov. Chavit Singson, are all in favor of Pacquiao's Glee guesting.

Reports of Pacquiao's guesting on US hit series started after one of the show's cast Darren Criss shared his dream to work with the boxing champion.

YouTube sensation and fellow Filipino Charice has also guested on the show as Sunshine Corazon, an exchange student from the Philippines. She has been nominated at the "1st Annual Glee: The Music Awards" hosted by Hollywood blogger Perez Hilton.

Charice nominated in 1st GLEE music awards

International singing sensation Charice has been nominated at the "1st Annual Glee: The Music Awards" hosted by Hollywood blogger Perez Hilton.

The 19-year-old rising superstar is one of the nominees in the Best Guest Performance and Best Duet category, according to perezhilton.com.

Charice, who plays Filipina exchange student Sunshine Corazon is competing against popular characters of the US hit musical series "GLEE" like Holly Holiday (Gwyneth Paltrow), Doris Sylvester (Carol Burnett), and Carl Howell (John Stamos) among others.

Meantime, Charice's powerful duet with Lea Michele, "Telephone" originally sang by Lady Gaga, is the Filipina singer's entry for the Best Duet awards.

The "1st Annual Glee: The Music Awards", presented by Columbia Records and 20th Century FOX will take place on May 31, 2011.

Lady Gaga builds one of the world's largest fan bases by using the web to talk directly and openly to her community.

This film celebrates Lady Gaga's special and unmediated relationship with her fans, the Little Monsters. The making of this film is a demonstration of the power of the web in its own right. The entire project, beginning with Lady Gaga's shoot in NYC on May 8th, to shipping materials to the television networks for air, took 10 days.

Within hours of the release of her new single "Edge of Glory" on May 9th, fans began uploading videos on YouTube, making the song their own by dancing to it, singing it and playing it on all kinds of instruments. Lady Gaga then posted a message on her website asking for more videos to be used in the film project. Fans responded within minutes and uploaded hundreds more videos. Back in the editing room, in real time as fan videos streamed in, editors were putting them into the film. The film was completed on May 18th in time to air during Lady Gaga's performance on the season finale of Saturday Night Live, and to also live on the web forever.

Finally, NTC chose ISDB standard

The NTC has now been given the go-ahead by the Commission on Information and Communications Technology (CICT) to convene a technical working group for the purpose of drafting the Implementing Rules and Regulation (IRR) for digital TV. The TWG will be composed of members from the broadcast industry and other stakeholders such as the government, suppliers and consumers.

In June of this year, the NTC dumped the European standard for digital television in favor of Japan’s Integrated Services Digital Broadcast (ISDB) technology as the standard for Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) broadcast service. But this can’t be fully implemented yet without the IRR. The NTC should first convene a TWG to craft the IRR and frequency planning for the implementation of the ISDB technology.

“An overwhelming consensus and endorsement among the various industry stakeholders was submitted to the Commission which bore Memorandum Circular 02-06-2010 on ‘Standard for Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) Broadcast Service’ adopting the ISDB-T platform,” said the NTC.

When DTT technology is enforced in the country, there is a need to switch off all analog TV handsets. The switch-off would render all nondigital TV sets obsolete unless connected to an external off-the-air tuner, or a satellite system.

The government is looking at delaying the compulsory transition of all analog television service providers to digital TV and for the termination of all analog TV broadcast transmissions from an earlier target set at the end of year 2015.

The Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster ng Pilipinas (KBP) has an interest in the formulation of the IRR and the frequency planning as these will have immediate, medium- and long-term effects on the operation of its members.

“Our members have already been preparing for the migration to digital TV. Capital expenditures have been budgeted and to a certain degree outlaid, notwithstanding uncertainties due to the absence of an IRR and frequency plan,” it has said. - Lectura, Business Mirror, dated 29 December 2010, 11:45 PM

Miss Philippines Earth 2011 beauties found a brief respite in the middle of the controversial weekly eliminations of the pageant with a surprise visit of the seaside municipality of Catanauan, Quezon province over the weekend.

The bevy of beauties rocked the sleepy, laid back town with their bikini fashion show at the spanking Catanauan Cove White Beach and Farms resort, wowing local tourists and town folks. They also planted trees in the rolling terrain of the resort, around 160 kilometers from Manila.

Catanauan is far off the beaten path of the usual pageantry of a beauty contest . It has also been under the radar of local tourists and travel agents because of its association with communist rebels.

But the candidates were surprised to see its marine splendor, a cream colored beach, and rich, decades-old trees that match the poster images of Miss Earth Philippines' environment advocacy.

Tamarind and acacia trees are over 100 years old, and a mangrove reservation area is also an attraction.

A few kilometers away is a botanical garden exporting blooms to Europe.

As for the New People’s Army, that is passé talk, according to Catanauan mayor Ramon Orfanel and resort developer Buddy Javier. Roads and other infrastructure development during the time of former President Joseph Estrada at the turn of the century helped turn around the economy of the municipality.

The beauties, of course, were unmindful of this socio-political background when they traversed Tayabas bay in banca rafts for their snorkeling adventure in its clear waters near Marinduque island.

It was a virgin moment for most of the girls who have not swam or snorkeled before in the middle of the sea where they saw reefs, urchins, flying fish and blue starfish.

"This is nature at its best," marveled Miss Virac Anna Brillante.

"God's creation is really amazing.... All the more we should take care of our nature," cooed Miss Malolos Denisse Toribio and Miss General Santos Catrine Ocampo.

Alas , the joy of the Catanauan nature trip and bonding will fade with next day's Monday elimination of 10 more ladies at the RCBC Plaza in Makati.

Eliminated were media favorites bombshell Miss Cainta Christianne Ramos and gutsy RPN 9 reporter Vivienne Gulla.

Pageant organizers Lorraine Schuck and Peachy Veneracion, who reportedly were saddened by the departure of some favorite candidates, also bid goodbye to Jaine Hidalgo of Milaor; Alyssa Canizares, Bayugan; Zhaniethia Jimenez, Parañaque; Diana Jainga, Passi; Amalia Brillante, Virac; Leslie Ching, San Isidro; Diana Santos, Vigan; and Aileene Dango, Loboc, Bohol.

But, for most of the candidates, the Catanauan episode is something to cherish for a long time. Win or lose, the visit crystallized their advocacy to help preserve the environment.

From the original 50 candidates, 10 more ladies will be ousted at the final eliminations of Miss Philippines Earth at Thunderbird Resorts in Binangonan, Rizal this weekend.

The remaining 10 survivors will have a grand showdown at the coronation night on June 5 at Puerto Princesa, which will be aired by ABS-CBN and The Filipino Channel (TFC).

Lopez group raises P3.9-B from sale of Sky Cable interest

The Lopez group has sold P3.6 billion Philippine Depositary Receipts (PDRs) covering 40% of Sky Cable Corp. to STT Communications Ltd. (STTC), a unit of Singapore's Temasek Holdings.

PDRs are equity instruments that transfer economic rights over an asset, such as dividends, witho...ut transferring voting interest.

ABS-CBN Corp. and Lopez Holdings Corp. sold P2.16 billion Sky Cable PDRs to STTC. STTC also bought new PDRs worth P1.45 billion as well as a P250-million convertible bond issued by Sky Cable.

The investment, which totaled P3.86 billion, gave STTC a 40% economic interest in Sky Cable.

The Lopez group said it will retain 60% economic interest and all voting control over Sky Cable.

ABS-CBN chairman Eugenio Lopez III said the transaction represents a closer relationship between the country's largest multimedia conglomerate and Singapore's leading information communications group.

"Sky Cable will be able to leverage on the technical expertise of STTC and continue providing its customers with innovative and world-class services, as it expands its Pay TV and high-speed broadband service offerings," he noted. - With ANC

ABS-CBN profits down 10% in Q1

BROADCASTER ABS-CBN Corp. is maintaining its yearend target of matching 2010’s performance despite recording a drop in profits in the first quarter, an official yesterday said.

“Definitely, we will hit the P3.1 to P3.2 billion as our target [income this year],” Rolando P. Valdueza, ABS-CBN chief financial officer, said in a briefing.

“We’re on track… If you look at it, first quarters are usually the slow ones,” Mr. Valdueza said.

Consolidated net income of the firm declined by 10% to P976 million in the first quarter from year-ago levels as performance corrected from the election-related advertising gains last year, data from the briefing show.

Net income fell despite a P674-million one-time gain from the sale of Sky Cable Philippine Depositary Receipts (PDRs) to Singapore-based STT Communications, Ltd.

Sampaquita Communications also bought additional PDRs worth P1.45 billion, thus, resulting in a 40% economic interest for STT Communications in Sky Cable, Mr. Valdueza said.

However, Mr. Valdueza stressed that the Lopez group retained its voting control over Sky Cable, despite a decrease in economic interest to 60%.

Consolidated gross revenues of ABS-CBN decreased by 15% to P6.559 billion.

Advertising revenues fell by 21% to P4.012 billion, while consumer sales decreased by 5% to P2.547 billion.

Expenses meanwhile decreased by 13% to P4.716 billion.

Shares in the Lopez-led firm increased by P0.60 to close at P42 apiece from its previous close on Wednesday. -- Kathleen A. Martin

ABS and GMA dispute April nationwide ratings

The network war rages with media giants ABS-CBN Corporation and GMA Network are both claiming to lead in nationwide TV ratings based on data for April from different media monitoring firms.

Based on Kantar Media's report, ABS-CBN said it topped the national TV ratings in April, taking a double digit lead in primetime, which is the most important timeblock and when advertisers place most of their spot buys or commercial load.

ABS-CBN said it continues to beat all networks on primetime with an audience share of 43 percent in April, or a 13 point lead over GMA Network's 30 percent.

On the other hand, GMA said it maintained its foothold in national ratings amid aggressive competition from other broadcast networks, based on figures from the most widely accepted ratings service provider, Nielsen TV Audience Measurement.

Based on household data surveyed in National Urban Philippines from April 1 to April 30 (with 24 to 30 based on overnight readings), GMA garnered 33.2 household audience share points, higher than ABS-CBN’s 31.3 and TV5’s 14.8.

GMA President Gilberto R. Duavit, Jr. said that GMA continues to lead in the ratings, despite the efforts of competition.

“We are extremely grateful to the growing number of viewers who subscribe to GMA programs making us number 1 nationwide. We will continue our efforts towards ensuring the delivery of unbiased and relevant news and public affairs programs from our News and Public Affairs Group as well as innovative programs from our Entertainment TV Group,” Duavit said.

In Urban Luzon, which comprises 77 percent of total television households nationwide, GMA said it’s lead over competing networks remained at double digit levels.

GMA sustained its strong ratings performance in the said area with 36.8 share points, 10.4 points ahead of ABS-CBN’s 26.4; and 20.6 points ahead of TV5’s 16.2.

In viewer-rich Mega Manila, which covers 58 percent of total television households nationwide, GMA garnered 37.6 share points, 12.8 points up from ABS-CBN’s 24.8; and 20.5 points higher than TV5’s 17.1.

Nielsen figures also show that among the three networks, GMA was the only channel in Mega Manila that made a leap in weekday primetime (6:30 to 11pm) this April relative to March.

GMA’ audience shares climbed by 2.8 points from 34.1 in March to 36.9 share points in April. Meanwhile, ABS-CBN’s audience shares dropped by 2.0 points from 33.5 in March to 31.5 in April; and TV5’s audience shares fell by 3.4 points from 20.9 in March to 17.5 in April.

Furthermore, nationwide ratings data from January 1 to April 30 (with April 24 to 30 based on overnight readings) show that GMA delivered superior performance in audience shares with 33.6 points, up from ABS-CBN’s 31.7 points and from TV5’s 15.1 points.

For the same period in Urban Luzon, GMA registered an imposing 37.1 share points, higher than ABS-CBN’s 26.7 by 10.4 and TV5’s 16.9 share points by 20.2 points.

Year to date figures for Mega Manila show that GMA-7 posted 38.2 audience share points versus ABS-CBN’s 25.1 and TV5’s 17.7 for a lead of 13.1 and 20.5 points respectively.

'Bebeng' intensifies into a storm

Signal No. 2 up over 4 provinces

MANILA, Philippines - Weather bureau Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical services (PAGASA) said on Saturday that tropical depression "Bebeng" has intensified into a storm and was threatening to hit the Bicol region.

As of 4 p.m., Bebeng was spotted at 220 kilometers east of Legaspi City with maximum winds of 65 kilometers per hour near the center.

Public storm signal no. 2 was raised over the following provinces:

•Sorsogon
•Albay
•Camarines Sur
•Catanduanes
•Northern Samar

Meanwhile, the following areas were placed under public storm signal no. 1:

•Masbate
•Ticao island
•Burias island
•Camarines Norte
•Quezon
•Polillo island
•Aurora
•Marinduque
•Eastern Samar
•Western Samar
Bebeng was expected to be around 60 kilometers northeast of Daet, Camarines Norte on Sunday afternoon.

By Monday, it was expected to be 110 kilometers north of Baler, Aurora or 70 km south of Tuguegarao City, Cagayan.

Pinoys strike Gold & Silver in Thailand Athletics Tourney

Olympian Marestella Torres and collegiate star Josie Malacad bagged a gold and a silver in the Thailand Open Athletics Championships at the Thammasap University grounds in Bangkok.

The 29-year-old Torres leaped to 6.32 meters to clinch the gold medal in the long jump, while Malacad settled for a silver in the women’s 400-meter hurdles.

Torres’ leap, though, was 13 centimeters short of the 6.45 meters which she recorded here in 2006.

It was also 3.4 centimeters shy of the national record of 6.68 meters, which she herself accomplished in the 2009 Southeast Asian Games.

Malacad, a former Palarong Pambansa gold medalist and is now a physical education student at the Far Eastern University, came in second in her pet event in one minute and 2.67 seconds.

Her time, though, was .23 seconds better than the 1:02.9 she recorded in a recent University Athletic Association of the Philippines meet.

Another Filipina, Keizel Pedrina of University of Sto. Tomas, placed sixth in the same event.

In other results, Archand Bagsit ended up fifth in the 200-meter dash, while Robin Tullo finished eighth in the men’s 110-meter hurdles of the men’s division.

Hanelyn Loquinto placed fourth in the women’s 200-meter run, while Palarong Pambansa bet Maureen Schriver finished sixth and seventh in the 100-meter and the 200-meter events, respectively.
